Join the NEC Jazz Studies department for a special forum featuring acclaimed trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Ambrose Akinmusire. Known for his originality, emotional depth, and boundary-defying approach to improvisation, Akinmusire has become one of the most vital voices in contemporary jazz.

A native of Oakland, California, Akinmusire first gained international attention after winning both the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition while still in his early twenties.

Akinmusire is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and a former member of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA. He has performed and recorded with artists including Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Vijay Iyer, Gerald Clayton, and Steve Coleman.

As a bandleader, his acclaimed recordings on the Blue Note label have earned widespread praise for their inventive compositions, poetic lyricism, and social consciousness.
