Prescreening:

All applicants must submit the following prescreening repertoire:

• A complete Classical sonata (e.g., music by Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, or others)
• A substantial Romantic work (e.g., music by Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Mendelssohn, or others)
• A fast etude

Final Auditions:

Although pianists are not accepted or rejected on the basis of the chosen pieces, the audition repertoire is seen as a statement of artistic identity. All works must be performed by memory with the possible exception of challenging contemporary music.

• A complete Classical sonata (all movements)
• A substantial Romantic work
• A fast etude
• A piece chosen by the applicant that contrasts in style to the other audition pieces.

NEC encourages applicants to submit diverse repertoire, including works composed by women, people from historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, and/or musicians from one’s own cultural background.

Recorded Auditions:

Applicants who have already submitted recordings of a complete program (all of the following pieces) for prescreening are not required to submit additional recordings for their audition.

Please submit recordings of the following pieces. All recordings must be recent, and recorded no earlier than this past June. Each piece should be recorded in one unedited take, but movements may be recorded separately.

• A complete Classical sonata (all movements)
• A substantial Romantic work
• A fast etude
• A piece chosen by the applicant that contrasts in style and period to the other audition pieces.
