Chihiro Asano is a Boston-based mezzo-soprano from Tokyo. She has sung with Boston Lyric Opera, MassOpera, and White Snake Projects. Recent roles include Ruggiero in Handel’s Alcina (MassOpera) and the title role in the world premiere of Kenji Oh’s Shizue with Portland Opera. A Marlboro Music Festival fellow(2024/2025), she also appeared as Hansel (2023) and Cinderella (2024) in Boston Lyric Opera’s Opera101 classroom series, bringing opera to Boston-area schools.
She graduated at the top of her class from Tokyo College of Music and earned an MM in Vocal Pedagogy and a Graduate Diploma in Opera Performance at the New England Conservatory. She is a two-time Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition district winner—Puerto Rico (2023) and Iowa (2025)—and placed Second in the Midwest Region in 2025.
In the studio, Asano focuses on healthy, flexible technique and clear musical storytelling. Her teaching draws on voice science: she presented on the Japanese female voice in anime at the 2021 PAVA Conference and led Aria seminars in 2024–25 on formants and scream voice for voice trainers in Japan.
