Cellist Jonathan Koh has established himself as one of the most exciting musical entrepreneurs and teachers of this generation. An active soloist, ensemble musician, and clinician, Jonathan has laid claim to several groundbreaking musical endeavors.
A passionate and dedicated teacher who has gained international recognition, Jonathan’s students have won countless major competitions and have performed across the globe. His students have also been featured in several media outlets throughout the world and have soloed with numerous professional orchestras.
Jonathan joined the San Francisco Conservatory of Music faculty as its youngest faculty hire in its school history. Soon after, Jonathan accepted the teaching position at the University of California – Berkeley. Jonathan’s teaching is continuously sought out by students, not only from Northern California, but from Southern California, neighboring West Coast states, the East Coast, and Asia. Jonathan also taught at the Meadowmount School of Music for several years and was invited to teach at the Heifetz International Music Institute.
Jonathan’s students have been finalists and received prizes in numerous competitions, including the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians, the Klein International String Competition, the American String Teachers Association, the Music Teachers National Association, the Lennox International Competition, and the Mondavi National Young Artists Competition. Additionally, his students have been mentioned in Yo-Yo Ma’s biography by Jim Whiting, chosen as a Fulbright Scholar, performed on NPR’s ‘From the Top’ radio and television show, performed on NBC’s ‘Martha Stewart Show’, and released a commercial recording of the complete J.S. Bach Six Cello Suites. Outside of competitions, Jonathan’s students have consistently sat principal chair at NYO/NYO2 orchestras, New York Strings Seminar Orchestra, and attended Morningside Music Bridge, Music@Menlo Chamber Music Institute, Tanglewood, Aspen Music Festival, Meadowmount School, Verbier Festival, and Cello Akademie Rutesheim.
Jonathan Koh received his education at Northwestern University, enrolling in its double-degree program to integrate pre-medicine, economics, and music. He also participated in the Yale University Summer Program to further his studies in medicine. In addition to his studies, Jonathan was the managing editor at the ‘Journal of Economics Management and Strategy’ (Harvard Business School) during his time at Northwestern. Jonathan was the founder and CEO of Musiccas, a cloud-based online application solutions company that partnered with various institutions and competitions across the world. Jonathan joined the New England Conservatory faculty in 2025, and he performs on an Andrea Guarneri cello circa 1690.
