Master of Music

Prescreening:

  • The entire first movement of a major cello concerto (memorized). If you choose Elgar, please submit a recording of both the 1st and 4th movements or the 1st and 2nd movements in one take.
  • Two contrasting movements of a J.S. Bach Suite (memorized).

Master of Music Final Auditions:

  • A complete concerto from the standard repertoire (memorized).
  • A complete J.S. Bach Suite (memorized).
  • A complete work written after 1970.
  • One of the following (memorized):
    • A showpiece such as Tchaikovsky Pezzo Capriccioso, Popper Elfentanz, or Davidoff At the Fountain
    • An Italian sonata by Boccherini, Valentini or Locatelli
    • A Popper Etude or Piatti Caprice
  • An additional piece of your choosing which is personally meaningful to you (memorized). Applicants are encouraged to explore works by underrepresented composers.

Recorded Auditions:

Please record a ~20-minute audition in one continuous and unedited take, comprised of the requirements listed below. Other than Bach, please stop at an appropriate place in the music to fit your audition within the expected 20-minute time frame. Please make every possible effort to record non-solo works with piano accompaniment. Your tape must include:

  • One complete movement of a J.S. Bach Suite (memorized, no repeats). 
  • The exposition of the first movement of a major concerto of your choice (memorized), excluding Elgar and the Rococo Variations.
  • The exposition of the first movement of a major sonata or an unaccompanied piece.
  • An additional piece – or an excerpt of it – written after 1970. Applicants are encouraged to explore works by underrepresented composers.
