Martha Maybury Wampler
At the age of 18, Martha Elizabeth (Maybury) Wampler, a native of Richmond, VA, studied violin with C. Roland Reasoner for two years (1946-1948) at the New England Conservatory.
She returned to NEC in 1951-1952, studying violin with Frank MacDonald, as well as taking courses in orchestra and solfege. Wampler received her undergraduate degree in mathematics in 1950 from Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, MA. In 1962, Wampler earned her M.A. in Music from California State College, Long Beach. In addition, Wampler studied violin at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago and the Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, CA.
In Europe, Wampler studied at the Orff-Institute, the Mozarteum, Salzburg in 1963-1964, and at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich in 1964-1965 under a Fulbright-Hays Grant. Wampler worked as an Elementary Instrumental Teacher in Bellflower, CA.

Martha Maybury Wampler Archives
The Wampler Papers occupy approximately .15 lin. ft. organized into six folders – all paper materials with the exception of three photographs.
This collection was donated to the Conservatory library in two parts in September and October 2005 by Martha Wampler, through her brother, Robert Maybury.
Access to the Martha Maybury Wampler Papers can be arranged by making an appointment with the Archivist. Appointments must be scheduled in advance. There are no restrictions pertaining to this collection.

The Martha Maybury Wampler Papers are organized into the following four series:

The Correspondence is divided into three categories: correspondence regarding Wampler’s Fulbright grant (with accompanying documentation; personal correspondence, consisting of one letter from Gertrud Orff, wife of Carl Orff and correspondence pertaining to the donation of this collection to the Conservatory
There are four photographs in the collection. The first two are 3 x 5 photographs of Martha Wampler playing the viola da gamba in duets – one picture with a gentleman playing double bass, in the other a woman playing recorder. The third photograph is a 5 x 7 photo of Martha Wampler, holding a copy of her own book, in discussion with two other women. The fourth is a 6 x 9 ½ photograph taken in 1972 of Martha Wampler teaching children the Orff method..
Wampler’s writings consist of a copy of her book, And Early Sing: Creativity and Participation with Young Children (ca. 1973) and a copy of a manuscript for the song “Give Me Liberty,” for which Wampler composed the lyrics (Music by Frederick Müller).
The Miscellaneous folder only contains one item: a brochure for an Orff-Schulwerk Workshop which Wampler taught at Eastern Nazarene College
