Handel & Haydn Society Presents: A Baroque Christmas
Jonathan Cohen, conductor
Robin Johannsen, soprano
H+H Orchestra
Our musical gift for the holidays is sure to brighten your spirits with the joy of the season: Bach’s exhilarating cantata—a partnership of soprano and solo trumpet in friendly “rivalry,” enlivened by H+H’s period instruments—ends in a spectacular fugue on the word “Alleluia”; tours-de-force for soprano Robin Johannsen: Silente Venti, in which her opening words quite literally silence turbulent instrumental forces; and a heavenly Gloria. Plus, Handel’s Concerto grosso and the H+H premiere of the lively Simphonie by much-admired Bach contemporary Jan Zelenka.
Jan Dismas Zelenka: Sinfonia a 8 concertanti in A minor
George Frideric Handel: Silete venti ("Be Silent, Winds")
Handel: Gloria for soprano and solo strings
Handel: Concerto Grosso in F Major, Op. 3, No. 4
Johann Sebastian Bach: Cantata 51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen ("Exult in God in all Lands")
Johann Vierdanck: Ich verkündige euch große Freude
Featuring the H+H Youth Choruses Concert Choir
