Graduate Applicants > Viola: Master of Music

Master of Music

Prescreening:

  • The Prelude and any dance movement from a J.S. Bach Cello Suite, or two contrasting movements from a Bach solo violin sonata or partita.
  • One movement from a concerto, sonata, or other work of an applicant’s choosing.

Each piece must be performed in a single, unedited take and submitted as a separate file labeled with the composers name, title of work, and movement (if applicable). Please ensure high sound quality and lighting and show full range of movement/use of instrument.

Master of Music Final Auditions:

  • A complete J.S. Bach cello suite, violin partita, or sonata (memorized).
  • A complete concerto (memorized).
  • A complete sonata for viola and piano or viola solo.
  • One piece of your choosing which is personally meaningful to you. Applicants are encouraged to explore works by underrepresented composers.

One of the above must have been composed within your lifetime.

Recorded Auditions:

Please record a 20-minute audition in one continuous and unedited take, comprised of the four requirements listed below. Other than Bach, please stop at an appropriate place in the music to fit your audition within the expected 20-minute time frame; as a rough guideline, attempt to play a similar amount of your concerto and sonata/work of your choice. Please make every possible effort to record non-solo works with piano accompaniment. Your tape must include:

  • One complete movement from a J.S. Bach cello suite, solo violin sonata or partita (memorized; no repeats).
  • The first movement from a major concerto (memorized).
  • The first movement of a sonata, for viola and piano or viola solo.
  • A work of your choice which is personally meaningful to you. Applicants are encouraged to explore works by underrepresented composers. For this selection, also include a short 1-2 minute verbal introduction to the music and why you chose this particular work.

*One of the above works for graduate applicants must have been composed within your lifetime.
