The future of music, made here.

Lorna Cooke deVaron

Lorna Cooke deVaron, choral conductor, was born in Western Springs, Ill., on January 17, 1921, daughter of Vernon Walter and Hazel Mildred (Watts) Cooke. DeVaron earned her B. A. from Wellesley College in 1942, where she studied theory with Nadia Boulanger and her M. A. from Radcliffe College in 1945.

At Radcliffe, deVaron studied conducting with G. Wallace Woodworth, choral composition with Archibald T. Davison, and composition with Walter Piston. DeVaron served as Assistant Conductor of the Radcliffe Choral Society, Radcliffe-Harvard choir, from 1942-1944. From there, deVaron went on to conduct the Bryn Mawr College Choir from 1944-1947. She spent two summers studying conducting.

About Lorna Cooke deVaron

In 1947, deVaron became the choral conductor and chairperson of the choral department at New England Conservatory. She would retain this position at NEC until 1988. During this time, the NEC Chorus performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for over thirty years, from 1953-1986. The NEC Chorus made more than a dozen recordings with the BSO for RCA Victor and Deutsche Grammophon. Six of these recordings earned the Grand Pris du Disque and three were nominated for Grammy Awards. The Conservatory chorus also took numerous domestic and international tours during deVaron’s tenure, including trips to Europe, the Soviet Union, Israel, Puerto Rico, and China.

Also while at New England Conservatory, deVaron mentored numerous students in the choral conducting program. Many of these students went on to achieve successful careers in conducting. Among them are: Frank Albinder, Jon Arterton, Betsy Burleigh, Jindong Cai, David Carrier, Marietta Cheng, Kay Dunlap, George Emlen, Bart Folse, Sheila Heffernon, Joe Horning, John Hugo, Donald Kendrick, Susan Klebanow, Janet McGhee, John Oliver, Johanna Hill Simpson, William Tortolano, and Scott Tucker.

In addition to the Conservatory, deVaron conducted in many other capacities. She served as conductor and teacher of choral conducting at Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood from 1952-1966; conductor of the Israel Summer Festival, Zimriya, 1977-1979; conductor of the New England Conservatory Camerata (1989-2001); conductor of the Longy Chamber Chorus (1988-2005); guest conductor of the Cameron Singers, Israel; guest conductor of Radio Chorus, Beijing, China, 1987; Chairman of the Choral Institute of Composers Conference, summers; member of the choral advancement panel, National Endowment for the Arts; conductor, New England Conservatory Chamber Singers at Monadnock Music Festival, summers 1982-1988, deVaron also served as editor and arranger of choral works for E. C. Schirmer and Galaxy Publications.

Among the awards that deVaron has received are the Medal for Distinguished Achievement, City of Boston, 1967; Medal for Distinguished Achievement, Radcliffe Graduate Society, 1972; Medal for Distinguished Achievement, Wellesley College, 1978; Medal of Israel, 1977; Ludi award, New England Conservatory, 1983; Harvard Glee Club Medal, 1987.

Lorna Cooke deVaron was married to Jose deVaron on May 14, 1944. The couple had four children: David, Joanna, Cristina, and Alexander. DeVaron passed away in October 2018 at the age of 97.

Lorna Cooke deVaron Archives

The Lorna Cooke deVaron Papers consist of 11 record cartons, and 5 flat boxes. The collection consists of paper records, scrapbooks, photographs, a few artifacts and about 5 lin. ft of scores (approximately 500-600 scores)

The Lorna Cooke deVaron Papers and Music collection came to the New England Conservatory Archives in three phases. Three boxes were initially transferred from the Performance Services Archives in Fall 2006 and these were processed by Simmons intern, Amy Conway. In Spring 2008, three more boxes containing chorus materials were transferred to the NEC Archives and were processed by Simmons intern, Steven Booth. These two collections were integrated by Archivist Maryalice Perrin-Mohr. Then several more boxes were donated to the NEC Archives by Lorna Cooke deVaron in 2009. All of these boxes had been stored at deVaron’s house in Cambridge, MA. In addition, some of the Copland photographs were transferred from Public Relations to this collection in 2010. Lorna Cooke deVaron donated her large collection of scores to the NEC Library in 2011. Additions to the collections were made in 2014. The additional items have not been inventoried. In early 2012, deVaron donated more programs, most of which were duplicates, as well as another scrapbook of materials dating from 1952-1957.

Access to the Lorna Cooke deVaron Papers and Music collection is by appointment through the Archivist. There are no restrictions pertaining to collection. Click to view selected items from this collection.

Approximately 300 items have item-level cataloging in the New England Conservatory Library’s online catalog. A call number search for “Lorna Cooke deVaron Score Collection” will retrieve all cataloged scores from the collection. Please contact the Archivist regarding copyright restrictions and publication permissions. This collection should be cited as: NECA 19.7. Lorna Cooke deVaron Papers, New England Conservatory Archives. Boston, MA.

The Lorna Cooke deVaron Papers are organized into the following thirteen series:

  1. Correspondence
  2. Administrative files
  3. Programs
  4. Publicity files
  5. Special performances
  6. Other Engagements
  7. Tour files
  8. Subject files
  9. News articles/Publications
  10. Photographs
  11. Scrapbooks
  12. Artifacts
  13. Music scores (some unprocessed)

The Correspondence is organized into general correspondence and then correspondence from the various groups of the NEC Community – administration, staff, faculty, students, etc. The General correspondence spans the years 1945-2006. DeVaron exchanged correspondence with numerous composers including Samuel Adler, Ernst Bacon, Jack Beeson, Ran Blake, Frank Brieff, Paul Chihara, Robert Cogan, Aaron Copland, John Crawford, Norman Dinerstein, Abel Ehrlich, Jim Furman, Alan Hovhaness, Anthony Iannaccone, Ruth Lomon, Witold Lutoslawski, Donald Martino, George Perle, Phillip Rhodes, Andrew Rindfleisch, Peter Schickele, Gunther Schuller, Robert Shaw, Rodion Shchedrin, Seymour Shifrin, Mal Sibulkin, Robert Sirota, Adrian T. Thomas, Randall Thompson, Yehudi Wyner, Iannis Xenakis and James Yannatos. Other highlights of the general correspondence include letters from Claudio Abbado, Jacqueline Kennedy, Senator Edward M. Kennedy and Robert Shaw.

The Administrative files contain materials documenting the operations of the choral department. These include choral library information, curriculum records, membership lists, departmental reports, repertoire assignments, repertoire lists, historical records and concert schedules.

Series three consists of Programs. Like the correspondence, the programs are organized by category. The first group contains programs of the NEC Chorus and Chamber Singers that occurred in Jordan Hall or elsewhere at NEC. These programs for the most part span the years 1947-1988. The next group of programs is from concerts of the NEC Chorus with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. These BSO programs primarily span the years 1951-1987. There are concert programs from performances at the Gardner Museum as well as other Boston locations, venues outside Boston but in Massachusetts, and performances outside of Massachusetts. There are also concert programs from other ensembles conducted by deVaron, including the NEC Alumni Chorus, the Conservatory Camerata, the Longy Chamber Singers, and miscellaneous other concerts conducted by deVaron. Finally, in this series are miscellaneous concert programs for which deVaron was not the conductor.

The fourth series consists of Publicity files relating to the NEC Chorus. These include posters/flyers, organized chronologically; summaries of press comments (reviews of the chorus); press releases concerning the chorus, as well as information dealing with radio broadcasts and recordings.

Series five documents Special performances made by the NEC Chorus during deVaron’s tenure. Among these special performances are concerts and recording sessions with Aaron Copland; concerts at the Gardner Museum, the Monadnock Music Festival, and the War Memorial Auditorium dedication; performances at Winterfest, and, most substantially, files concerning performances of the NEC Chorus with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

The sixth series consists of a large amount of material relating to “Other Engagements” referring to professional engagements that deVaron had that were separate from the NEC Chorus. The “Other Engagements” series is divided into several categories referring to the different varieties of activities in which deVaron was participating. These include Classes/Workshops, Conducting positions, Lectures, and Writings. There is also a category for “Notes”- folders which contain notes on a particular topic for which the purpose is not known. Among the engagements highlighted here are deVaron’s work with the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, the Choral Institute at Wellesley, the Zimiriya Festival in Israel, the Cameran Singers in Israel, the Conservatory Camerata, and the Longy School of Music Chamber Singers. In terms of the lectures which deVaron presented, the best effort was made to organize the materials according to a specific lecture, however, there may be some crossover by topic. DeVaron gave lectures at the BSO, NEC, Radcliffe, and Wellesley College among many others.

The seventh series contains the Tour files for the NEC Chorus and Chamber Singers under deVaron. These files are organized chronologically from 1957-1988. For the larger tours, the materials are organized into several folders, each focusing on a specific aspect of the tour. Some of the larger tours include those to Puerto Rico (1965), Spain/Soviet Union (1966), California (1970), Europe (1972), Israel (1978), Bulgaria/Romania (1987) and China (1988).

A small number of Subject Files makes up the eighth series. These include: biographical sketches of deVaron; information about awards that deVaron received; items from Bryn Mawr, Radcliffe, and Wellesley College; correspondence with E. C. Schirmer; personal materials, and miscellaneous brochures, flyers, reports, studies and applications.

The News articles/Publications series contains both NEC publications and articles published by numerous newspapers and periodicals. The articles date from the 1940s through 2005, with the majority of the articles dating from the 1960s-1980s. A large portion of the articles are reviews of concerts given by the NEC Chorus. There are numerous reviews of concerts in which the NEC Chorus performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Also included in this series are a number of articles pertaining to the NEC Chorus tours, particularly the one to the Soviet Union in 1966.

The tenth series is comprised of Photographs. The photographs are organized by subject. These include BSO performances, Copland concerts/recordings and Tanglewood. More general photographs include press photographs (head shots) of deVaron; candid photographs of deVaron; other (non-NEC) choruses; photographs of deVaron conducting; general NEC Chorus photographs; and photographs from the NEC Chorus tours including California, China, Puerto Rico (1965), Puerto Rico (1983), Romania/Bulgaria, and the White House/Capitol/NY tour, as well as a large number of photos from the Soviet Union tour.

There are several scrapbooks in this collection. The two largest are anniversary scrapbooks commemorating deVaron’s 30th anniversary at NEC in 1977-1978 and her retirement from the NEC Chorus in 1988. There is a scrapbook that deVaron compiled from the Soviet Union tour, some of this is still intact, the rest is loose pages. There is also a scrapbook from the 1940s-1950s and another focusing on the NEC Alumni Chorus. An additional scrapbook was donated by deVaron to the Archives in 2012. This scrapbook spans the years 1952-1957 and contains concert reviews, photos, programs etc. It has been photocopied for preservation purposes.

The box of Artifacts contains mostly award plaques for deVaron from various organizations including the Alfred Nash Patterson Foundation for the Choral Arts, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (from 1962, 1964, and 1970), the NEC Alumni Association, and the ACDA Eastern Division. Also included in this series are a silver plate/plaque and a silver Christmas bell which the Chorus received when they sang at the White House in 1975.

The final box of oversize materials includes items that would ordinarily fit into other series but that are physically too large to be shelved with their respective series. This box contains posters, a citation for deVaron for the Boston Medal for Distinguished Achievement, an oversize photo of deVaron conducting, and most notably a poster with a photo of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, signed by all of its members as a tribute to deVaron.

deVaron’s score collection consists primarily of works featuring chorus, many of which were conducted by deVaron during her time as conductor of the New England Conservatory Chorus. Many of the scores include markings made by deVaron. Approximately 300 items have item-level cataloging in the New England Conservatory Library’s online catalog. A call number search for “Lorna Cooke deVaron Score Collection” will retrieve all cataloged scores from this collection.
