Recognizing that music is culturally and linguistically situated, the Modern Languages Department strives to be a resource for the NEC community in the study of language and culture. We support NEC's mission to produce musicians with a broad intellectual perspective, as well as a respect for other cultures and an awareness of global issues.
Just as the study of music is more than simply knowing what notes to play and how long to play them, the study of language is more than memorizing verb endings, prepositions and pronunciations. Language education at NEC invites you to:
-
Enter new communities, past and present. Meet the people and places that shape your music. Meet a new audience.
-
Encounter new ways of communicating and seeing the world. Are you getting the message? Is your message getting through? Change your perspective.
-
Explore new connections to other people and our own humanity. Where do we meet each other? Where do we meet ourselves? Where is the music in those places?
