Gerard Goguen

  • Trumpet (BSO)

Fresh out of high school, Gerard Goguen (1925–2002) played in military bands during WWII, then attended NEC (1951 DP) on the GI Bill. From 1952 to 1979 he was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra trumpet section, teaching at NEC from 1964 through his BSO retirement. His interest in precision instruments made of metal extended to classic MG cars, of which he owned 27. This collection formed the core of the Westminster (Vt.) MG Car Museum, which Goguen opened in 1984, while operating a successful MG mail-order parts business—and working as a ski instructor at Vermont resorts. Goguen was quoted as saying that his musician’s ear helped him appreciate the sound of an old-style car engine.
