Carey Shunskis is a choral conductor and soprano based in Boston. Ms. Shunskis is the Director of Choral Programs at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and voice faculty at South Shore Conservatory. She is a guest conductor and clinician with the Conservatory Youth Chorus and conducts masterclasses and clinics focusing on vocal and choral pedagogy in local high schools. Ms. Shunskis is a choral adjudicator and clinician for ACDA Choral Festivals and in 2017 she was the Lead Teacher with the Vienna Boys Choir 2017 Summer Music Academy in Hong Kong under the leadership of Gerald Wirth and Andy Icochea Icochea.
Ms. Shunskis is the Co-Founder of the South Shore Children’s Chorus, an organization offering the highest level of musical literacy and vocal training to students in South Shore communities and beyond. As the former Director of Intermediate and Concert Choirs, Ms. Shunskis collaborated with the Treble Chorus of New England, Genesis Chamber Singers, Quincy Choral Society and Braintree High School.
In addition to her work with children’s choruses, Ms. Shunskis is Music Director of Harvard pro Musica, a community choir for adults and high school students from the western suburbs of Boston. Under her leadership, the ensemble has performed Bach Mass in G Major and selected cantatas from the Christmas Oratorio, Liszt Missa Choralis, Brahms Liebeslieder Walzer, Schubert Mirjams Siegesgesang and additional works by Mozart, Larsen, Kodaly, Elgar, Pinkham, Haydn and Duruflé. She founded the ensemble’s annual Summer Choral Workshop in 2016 to provide community chorus members an opportunity to work with professional vocal pedagogues, singers and conductors from Boston and New York City in clinics, rehearsal, and sectionals culminating in a choral concert.
Ms. Shunskis is an active soprano in and around Boston, Rhode Island and Philadelphia. She is the Soprano Choral Scholar at Marsh Chapel, where she has recently performed as soloist in Bach’s St. John Passion, Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus and Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus and Dixit Dominus, Mozart Mass in C, , BWV 179, 74, and 249, and the world premiere and recording of James Kallembach Most Sacred Body of Jesus. Ms. Shunskis is the Director of the Thurman Choir, an non-auditioned community choir at Marsh Chapel. Ms. Shunskis is a member of the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus and Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of The Brookline Consort, the premiere vocal chamber ensemble of Brookline.
Ms. Shunskis has performed as a soloist and chorus member with Trinity Church, Harvard Immaculate Heart of Mary players, Worcester Polytechnic Institute choirs, Eccelisa Consort of Providence, Masterworks Chorale, Phoenicia Singers, Weimar Bach Academy, Choralp festival in France, and is a founding member of VOICES 21C and Common Ground Voices/La Frontera. Ms. Shunskis was a core member of the Philadelphia Singers and can be heard on the 2015 album featuring Randall Thompson’s Requiem. Ms. Shunskis made her debut with the Quincy Choral Society singing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in 2018.
Ms. Shunskis received a Masters of Music degree in Choral Conducting at Boston University in 2012 and Bachelors of Music degrees in Music Education and Voice Performance from the University of Rhode Island.
