Austin McMahon currently leads ensembles and teaches private drum-set lessons for the jazz department of New England Conservatory’s Preparatory and Continuing Education Division (Prep/SCE), Boston, MA. He was a Teaching Fellow for Jazz Improvisation at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA from 2010-2015 as well as being a guest accompanist and recording artist for their Jazz Harmony & Arranging course. For three consecutive years, Harvard University awarded him a Certificate of Distinction in Teaching in affiliation with the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning for the “excellence of his work with students and strength of his commitment to teaching.”
While earning his Master’s Degree in Jazz Percussion Performance from the University of Miami, Austin was an interim teaching assistant for private drum lessons in the drum-set studio of the Frost School of Music, Miami, FL. After relocating to Boston in 2005, he was the Percussion Curriculum Director and Instructor for a grant funded program in Somerville, MA public schools known as the 21st Century Program and has taught percussion lessons and ensembles at the Brookline Extensions Program, Brookline, MA, Music’s Cool in Londonderry, NH and led a summer percussion workshop at the Concord Conservatory of Music, West Concord, MA. He currently teaches for the MIT Emerson Scholars Program and was recently a featured clinician at the School of Groove in Cambridge, MA.
Austin actively participates in educational outreach programs with Quartet of Happiness an ensemble dedicated to educating students about the history and tradition of jazz through interactive game pieces and role-playing theatrics. In 2008, this ensemble was awarded the Ernie Boch Jr. Music Drives Us grant to bring their music to several schools in underprivileged school districts of Massachusetts and is part of Celebrity Series of Boston’s pilot outreach program for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
McMahon was also a performer/educator for a series of performances and workshops for elementary school children throughout Italy in November of 2010 with the Kevin Harris Project. In addition to working with students at the elementary level, Austin has also co-led several workshops for gifted teens at the high school level at schools including: New World School of the Arts, Miami, FL and The Northwest Academy (performing arts high school), Portland, OR.
