Ubuntu Dialogue Dinner: Peace and Violence in a Tumultous World
What constitutes violence? Is violence just physical harm? What constitutes peace? If there is peace, can injustice still exist? Who defines violence? Who defines the narrative or tells the story? What does violence mean to different communities? What does peace mean to various communities (from the personal to local, to the national and global)? What does peace mean to you? Is peace safety?

The topic for the Ubuntu Dialogue Dinner will be Peace and Violence in a Tumultous World: The Danger of a Single Story.

The Ubuntu Dialogue Dinner is a campus-wide community dinner open to students, staff, faculty, and alumni who are interested in moving through candid yet compassionate conversation on themes relevant to them and often hard to speak about. We will share a meal and participate in a global tea ceremony while discussing significant topics affecting the local, national, and international socio-cultural landscape.

Goal: The goal of the Ubuntu Dialogue Dinner is to build genuine connections among NEC community members and engage in dialogue topics that are meaningful to our community. Through story, we will share our perspectives, engage in deep and compassionate listening, and learn strategies linked to having dialogue through differing beliefs, experiences, and ideologies. The evening will be curated with specific prompts, and facilitated by CEB. Each table will have co-facilitators (one student paired with one staff/faculty member per table) leading the discussion, who will be trained by CEB to facilitate effectively.

This will be a trauma-informed and empathetic space for dialogue incorporating conversation guidelines and ways for participants to take care of themselves and others as the dialogue progresses.

At the dinner, participants will receive dialogue resources, which we will put into practice as we connect, share, and listen. Themes linked to the evening will be shared out through the campus newsletters in the weeks following the newsletter.

“Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.” - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This is a free dinner where RSVP is asked for. Ethiopian food will be served, and we will explore global tea ceremonies.

For further CEB events see the CEB Programming Webpage and October Dialogue Month Flyer.

The theme is "Talking Tapestries: The Courage to Engage in Difficult Dialogue". This month, we will focus on developing and practicing helpful tools for challenging dialogue, and will have community and learning opportunities for all to engage in. CEB will also share resources each week.
