SCE Pedagogy Workshop: String Crossings for Both Hands: What to Do With All Those Elbows (Online)

If you are a teacher of violin or viola, or an advanced player, you know that teaching violin is a process which builds and accumulates technical skills and artistic awareness. Organizing a basic strategy for the teaching/learning paradigm is helpful in giving this work a thoughtful structure. Necessary to this strategy are two things: understanding the cumulative nature of the process, and knowing which specific foundational skills are essential to each new skill added as the students progress. Technical facility and musical awareness, based on a secure foundation, combine to allow the student to engage in a successful and satisfying study of advanced solo, orchestral, and chamber music repertoire.

This summer’s offering of two pedagogy workshops, All About Vibrato on July 22 and String Crossings for Both Hands: What to Do With All Those Elbows on August 5, are intended as independent events, but they will also serve as a sampler prelude to the course Violin Pedagogy Forum: From Seitz to Mendelssohn to be offered in the fall of 2020, which will offer a structured approach to teaching both fundamentals and higher level violin techniques. Whether to sharpen your teaching or playing skills, these workshops can help to expand your awareness and direction in two of the many areas which challenge all of us players and teachers.
