Join the NEC Symphonic Choir for the ensemble's 2-part performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, conducted by Erica J. Washburn. Satirical in nature, full of texts reflecting romance, impropriety and ridicule, this choral icon of the 20th century is a work which demands the spirit of the greatest bards throughout history.
Soloists include soprano Kristina Costello '23 MM, tenor Philippe L'Esperance '22 AD, and baritone Matthew Christopher '22 MM. The chorus is Joined by pianists Seulah Noh and Da-Yu Liu and six percussionists.
This performance is open to in-person audiences, and can also be viewed below via livestream.

Originally from Longwood, Florida, baritone Matthew Christopher is pursuing his master's degree in Vocal Performance at New England Conservatory studying under Michael Meraw. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from Furman University where he studied under Dr. Bruce Schoonmaker and Dr. Grant Knox. He has recently performed as Belcore (L'Elisir d’amore) and Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) at NEC in their Opera Scenes concert and as the Second Commissioner, First Officer, and Jailer in NEC's 2021 filmed opera, Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites. Next April, he will be singing the role of Jim in NEC's production of An American Dream. After graduation, he intends to pursue a career in both Christian ministry and classical singing in Boston. Matthew would like to extend his thanks to his friends, family, and church for all their love and support, and foremost to God, who is the song beyond imagining, for all things, especially His Love and Grace.

Kristina Costello
Kristina Costello is a coloratura soprano from Long Island, NY.She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Carnegie Mellon University. While at CMU, she sang a wide plethora of roles and repertoire, including, Flora (Turn of the Screw), Zémire, cover (Zémire et Azor), and Almirena (Rinaldo). She was selected to perform “Lascia ch’io pianga”.from Rinaldo at CMU’s commencement ceremony.
Outside of school, Kristina has held lead roles in multiple contemporary operas premiered in the Pittsburgh area. In 2020, she won the Michael Mayes award at the Death by Aria Competition as part of the Utah Vocal Arts Academy. Kristina has attended various music programs including Classical Singing and New York in June, Utah Vocal Arts Academy, Songfest as a Colburn Fellow, Oyster Bay Music Festival, and the Savannah Voice Festival. While at SVF, she worked closely with composer Michael Ching as Dater #38 in his opera, Speed Dating Tonight.
Kristina is pursuing her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at NEC in the voice studio of Lisa Saffer. Besides singing, Kristina loves teaching private music lessons, playing the ukulele, and taking care of her pet bird, Peep.
Philippe L'Esperance
Praised for his “agility, range, and pleasant timbre” (Opera News), tenor Philippe L’Esperance is a recent participant at the Merola Opera program where he participated in a virtual opera Back home through the stage door. At the Manhattan School of Music, he was featured as Matthew in Picker’s Emmeline, Prince Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Sandor Barinkay in Johann Strauss’s Der Zigeunerbaron, and Tito in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. Philippe has appeared as a Gaddes Festival artist and Gerdine Young Artist with the Opera Theater of Saint Louis where he appeared most recently as Lucano in Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea. Other roles include Giuseppe in Verdi’s La Traviata and as Jake in Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Grapes of Wrath. With the Chautauqua Institution’s Voice Program, he has appeared as Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore, Prince Karl Franz in Romberg’s The Student Prince, and Peter Quint in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. Philippe made his New York Festival of Song debut as an Emerging Artist with NYFOS@North Fork. With NYFOS he also made his Caramoor debut as a Caramoor Rising Star. Philippe also made his Carnegie Hall debut in Vaughn Williams A Serenade to Music.
At NEC, Philippe is a candidate for the Artist Diploma and studies with Bradley Williams.
