Faculty Recital: Pei-Shan Lee

| New England Conservatory: Jordan Hall

NEC Collaborative Piano faculty performs ensemble works of Beethoven and Mendelssohn with NEC faculty, alumni and students.

NEC cello faculty Paul Katz and Artist Diploma alum Korbinian Altenberger come together for Beethoven's G Major Piano Trio and Ravel's G Major Sonata for Violin and Piano, followed by Pei-Shan and Korbinian performing Mendelssohn's Concerto for Piano and Violin. A select group of NEC students perform with the soloists, including the Verona Quartet.

Pianist Pei-Shan Lee has toured the world as a duo and chamber music partner, in concerts that include the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Cleveland’s Severance Hall, and venues in Belgium, France, Germany, Israel, Russia, Spain, and Taiwan. In recent summers, Ms. Lee has also performed at the Mostly Mozart Festival, Caramoor Festival, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Heifetz Institute, Chautauqua Institute, Music Academy of the West, Pro Quartet in France, the Great Wall Academy in China, and the Formosa Chamber Music Festival in Taiwan.

At NEC, Ms. Lee is a member of the Collaborative Piano Faculty and Director of the Sonata Night series. A dedicated teacher and advocate of the collaborative piano field, she created a new MM in Collaborative Piano at California State University Northridge in 2013. She is also on the Perlman Music Program's faculty in Sarasota, and directs the Collaborative Piano Fellowship program at the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine. In her hometown Boston, she works with the BSO’s guest conductors and soloists, and is the pianist seen in 'The Portrait', a documentary film on violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, and 'Talent Has Hunger', a film on cellist Paul Katz and his students.

A native of Taiwan, Ms. Lee came to the U.S. after winning the Youth Division of Taiwan’s National Piano Competition. Her numerous honors include the Rosa Lobe Memorial Award from the Cleveland Institute of Music, in recognition of the highest level of artistic achievement in collaborative piano. Her doctoral thesis “The Collaborative Pianist: Balancing Roles in Partnership” has become an important resource for schools wishing to begin a Collaborative Piano program.
