Chloe Brisson, Jazz Voice

I chose NEC because of the people, the professors, and the sense of community that wasn’t present at other conservatories.

What was your first impression of NEC?

NEC seemed like a really great place to grow as an artist and focus on that part of being a musician. You get to discover what kind of music you want to do and really do it.

Tell me about your musical backstory…what got you to where you are today?

I’m from northern New Hampshire and my dad was pianist so I started singing with him at around 9 or 10. I applied to NEC and got in but went to University of Miami very last minute. I lasted a semester there, before transferring to NEC. I’ve had so many amazing opportunities here.

What is the best thing about life as a voice major?

I think that my instrument is a part of my body so I can go anywhere and collaborate with anyone easily. I also think that singing is very universal, so it makes it easy to connect with people who are not necessarily typical musicians.

Who has been your favorite teacher? Why?

Dominique Eade is an incredible teacher and brilliant woman. She’s really helped me determine the direction I want to go in and has been really supportive.

John McNeil really changed my playing. If you give him the time and effort he will give every ounce back to you. He really cares about his students and has been very supportive of me.

What makes NEC unique? Why did you choose here over other schools?

I chose NEC because of the people, the professors, and the sense of community that wasn’t present at other conservatories. The musicians that come here are just really talented and interesting people.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

Come in really strong and ready to go. I think freshman would benefit from coming in a trying to play with new people and putting in a solid effort because it really pays off ultimately to do a good job early on. You want to make connections with your professors and classmates, even in the early required classes, because those connections will be useful later.
