Prescreening:
Video prescreening recordings are required of all Artist Diploma (Institute for Concert Artists) applicants, including NEC students and alumni.. Recordings must be uploaded as digital files to our online application by December 1, and must be produced in accordance with the following guidelines:
- All tracks must be clearly numbered and labeled with composer’s name, title of work.
- For video, the applicant should be clearly lit and visible.
- Recordings should focus on the applicant’s artistry and not include long portions of other players/singers, unless it reflects a key compositional aspect of your work.
Please submit:
- A compelling 15-20 minute portfolio with at least 4 pieces, showcasing your artistic range and that makes a personal artistic statement. We want to hear your best work. We welcome originals, recompositions, and/or arrangements. Include at least one piece that shows your engagement with a pre-existing work or tradition. Works should be recorded and submitted as separate videos or tracks. If you have a produced piece that is not video, you may submit it. However, it is recommended that applicants submit at least one piece that is a live video performance.
- A short video (no more than 3 minutes) telling us about why you chose this musical program to submit as your prescreening and how it reflects your artistic purpose/values.
Live Audition:
The NEC Artist Diploma offers substantial training as an artist and performer. Please help the audition panel understand your artistry by preparing the following:
- Perform a compelling 15-minute set of contrasting works showcasing your artistic range and that makes a personal artistic statement. We want to hear your best work. We welcome originals, recompositions, and/or arrangements. Include at least one piece that shows your engagement with a pre-existing work or tradition.
This set should be different from what was submitted for pre-screening.
Applicants are encouraged to submit diverse repertoire, including works composed by women, people from historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, and/or musicians from one’s own cultural background.
Additional Audition Information:
Finalists audition live in Jordan Hall before a jury consisting of external industry colleagues.
Rhythm Section Support:
- A rhythm section (consisting of piano, bass, and drums) will be provided to assist with your live audition upon request.
- If you plan to bring additional players with you, please contact your admission counselor.
You may be additionally asked to engage with a rhythm section or faculty at the audition musically or through interview questions.
