What was your first impression of NEC? How has that changed since you’ve been here?

I’ve only been here 5 months, but my first impression was that NEC was super professional but welcoming. I loved that it had lots of history and how many concerts there were. I also really love how many varieties of music there are here.

Tell me about your musical backstory…what got you to where you are today?

I’ve been playing piano since I was 3 or 4. I always loved it, even when it wasn’t the center of my life. I went to a very academic school, but when it came time to look at colleges, I thought music would be what I would apply myself to most.

What is the best thing about life as a piano major?

There are great professors. Piano can be played with every instrument, so I’ve had the chance to play with my friends who play different instruments. It also made keyboard class much easier!

Who has been your favorite teacher? Why?

I’ve only had a few so far and they have all been great. My studio teacher, Bruce Brubaker, has lots of information and so much knowledge to share. He always gives a great perspective and feedback after every lesson.

What makes NEC unique? Why did you choose here over other schools?

It really came down to the professors, but also that it was small and focused, everyone seemed to have great motivation here, and I really loved Boston.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

I’d say really figure out time management, don’t stress out too much, take advantage of everything here and really do everything. Make friends with everyone. You never know who your next chamber partner might be. There are some great musical connections to be made here.
