In town for a performance of his music by Gil Shaham at NEC's Jordan Hall, William Bolcom comes to New England Conservatory for this colloquium on his recent music.
NEC's previous encounters with William Bolcom were in 2009, when he was resident composer for the NEC Preparatory School's contemporary music weekend, "Today's Youth Perform Today's Music," and in 2011, when he was in residence at NEC during rehearsals of his music by Boston Modern Orchestra Project, NEC's affiliate orchestra for new music.
Recipient of the National Medal of Arts, 2007 Composer of the Year by Musical America, and multiple Grammy Awards for his ground-breaking setting of Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience, William Bolcom is a composer of cabaret songs, concertos, sonatas, operas, symphonies, and much more. He was awarded the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his Twelve New Etudes for piano. NEC awarded Bolcom an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2001, during inaugural ceremonies for President Daniel Steiner.
