Language and Diction Exams for Vocalists
in the Master of Music Program

Monday, August 27 - 7:00-9:00 - SB 315

Diction Testing

The placement exam in diction will be in two parts: spoken and written. Two poetry texts in each language taken from the standard vocal repertoire (German Lied, French mélodie and Italian song) will first be read aloud by each individual student privately. The student will then take the sheet containing the texts and write the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) above the text. The sheet will then be handed to the proctor. The scoring of the exam will determine whether or not a student will need to take a certain class in diction, and/or into which section the student will be placed.

Language Testing

These two tests are designed to evaluate your Italian and/or German language abilities. You should only be taking this test if you have prior experience with either language. You will be tested on Grammar, Reading Comprehension, and Writing. Answer as many questions as you can. The idea of this test is not to get a high score, but rather to place you in the correct course for your level of Italian and/or German. If you do not know the answer to a question it is better to leave it blank then to guess. There will not be a spoken portion of this exam.
