Meet the 2015–2016 Residence Life Staff
The Residence Hall is staffed by nine full-time student and paraprofessional staff members, Resident Assistants (RAs) and Graduate Assistants (GAs), along with one full-time professional staff member, the Director of Residential Life. Our student staff members work to create a communal environment within the Residence Hall through personal interaction with their peers and by sponsoring creative programs to support the philosophy and objectives of Residence Life at New England Conservatory.
2nd Floor RA
Thomas Burrill is starting his third year of undergrad studies at NEC, where he studies piano with Wha Kyung Byun. Thomas was raised in Iowa City Iowa, where throughout high school, he trained as a competitive swimmer, golfer, and tennis player. In Boston, Thomas enjoys conducting and directing a local church choir when he is not practicing. In his spare time, Thomas enjoys all sorts of outdoor activities, as well as exploring Boston in search of good food. As a returning staff member, Thomas is looking forward to meeting both the new and returning second floor boys in the fall!
3rd Floor RA
Frank John, originally from San Antonio, Texas, is in his second year of undergraduate studies for tuba performance with Mike Roylance. When he’s not practicing, you’ll most likely catch Frank studying… But! When he manages to not be completely immersed in his studies, Frank enjoys what Boston has to offer: a beautiful city filled with history, culture, and food! Frank loves the outdoors, and enjoys every chance he gets to go fishing or hiking. Frank looks forward to this next year with the TFB’s (Third Floor Boys), and hopes that the dynasty that is the TFB’s will uphold to its traditional glory.
Maura Shawn Scanlin
4th Floor RA
Maura Shawn Scanlin is beginning her junior year at NEC where she studies violin with Lucy Chapman. Maura grew up in North Carolina and graduated high school from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. In addition to her classical music studies, Maura plays and studies many other styles of music, including traditional folk music. When not playing music, she enjoys reading, drinking tea, photography, and the outdoors! Maura is returning for her second year on the Residence Life Staff, moving to the 4th floor from the 6th, and is looking forward to another year!
5th Floor RA
Sonnet Swire is a senior studying composition with a concentration in Music Education. When she's not composing, she likes to immerse herself even more into music by practicing theory or reading about a composer. But when she takes a break from music, she enjoys hanging out with friends, laughing, and snuggling with animals. This is Sonnet’s third year on staff and she aspires to ensure that all her 5th floor residents fall in love with NEC just as she has!
Alice Chenyang Xu
6th Floor RA
Alice Chenyang Xu, just finished up her Master’s degree in piano performance at NEC and is continuing her studies as a first-year Graduate Diploma student with Wha-Kyung Byun and Russell Sherman. Alice, originally from China, has an avid interest in culture and language and loves to meet new people from different places. Classical music is Alice's absolute passion, but she also enjoys listening to electronic jazz, trip-hop, dubstep, bossa nova, experimental music and much more. Aside from music, she is also interested in international travel, interior design, vintage art, lo-fi photography, reading, writing and much more. As a new member of the ResLife staff, Alice looks forward to meeting her new 6th floor residents and embarking on this fine journey together!
7th Floor RA
Second year undergraduate Elise Kolle is a harp performance major studying with BSO Principal, Jessica Zhou. Elise grew up in the Washington, DC metro area where she was a National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellow. When not hauling a harp around, Elise can be found running, cooking or reading Vogue. Elise stands at just 4'11", a solid 14 inches shorter than her harp. She is looking forward to an epic year of bulletin boards and girl time with the 7th floor ladies!
GA for Student Activities
Daniel Hersog will begin the second year of the Master's Degree Program majoring in jazz composition, studying with Frank Carlberg and Ken Schaphorst. Daniel is from Vancouver, Canada and is thoroughly enjoying his NEC experience thus far. In his free time he enjoys watching sports, playing golf, and exploring the many great neighborhoods that Boston has to offer. He looks forward to planning and participating in many activities for our NEC community.
GA for Wellness
Davey Harrison, originally from Gloucester, England, is completing the second year of his Master’s Degree in the Contemporary Improvisation Department. He loved his first year at NEC and can’t wait for the year to start. His main musical passions are the mandolin and singing - he’s always ready to jam in his free time! Davey is excited to be a part of the ResLife team and looks forward to promoting health and wellness programs for new and returning students within the NEC community.
GA for Residential Life
Nicholas Myers, originally from Cadillac, Michigan, is entering his senior year at NEC. A classical double bassist, he studied with Larry Wolfe for three years and currently studies with Todd Seeber, both of the BSO. Among the music Nicholas enjoys listening to are the symphonies and chamber works of Beethoven and Brahms, the Punch Brothers, Mastodon, and of course, Edgar Meyer. Around campus, Nicholas has worked at the NEC Preparatory School and Institutional Advancement, both of which offered valuable non-musical experience and insight. For recreation, Nicholas enjoys reading, bicycling, Game of Thrones, baseball, Settlers of Catan, and discovering new places in Boston. Nicholas previously spent two years as the 3rd Floor RA and is excited to be the Graduate Assistant for Residential Life for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Director of Residential Life
Allesandra Cionco will be entering her sixth year as the Director of NEC's Residence Life program. An NEC graduate herself, Allesandra has been immersed in the NEC community for almost a decade and knows Boston and this community well. Allesandra continues to sing with local company, Boston Opera Collaborative, and as the soprano cantor at Back Bay's St. Cecilia Parish. In her spare time, Allesandra enjoys cooking, spending time with friends and family, and finding new areas of Boston that she has yet to explore.
