In its fifth year of partnering with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, New England Conservatory brings a new twist to its musical contribution to these popular, free outdoor productions on the Boston Common.
In past years, NEC musicians performed free concerts that preceded CSC's performances of Shakespeare plays.
This year, the music is incorporated into the play itself, in keeping with this production's grounding in the entertainment world.
CSC Founding Artistic Director Steven Maler has moved Shakespeare's comedy from its original setting in Milan to Rat Pack–era Las Vegas, "the big city full of temptations where a couple of buddies could have an adventure, where friendship and loyalty would be put to the test."
NEC doctoral candidate Colin Thurmond has assembled a jazz band to perform a set list that includes standards like "Fever" and "Witchcraft."
Colin Thurmond, music director
Evan Allen '13, piano
Henry Fraser '14, bass
Nick Neuberg '14, drums
Jake Novak, trombone
Substitutes (if needed) for bass and drums are Dorsey Bass '13 and Ethan Parcell.
