Sistema Fellows Program at New England Conservatory

New England Conservatory is soliciting applications for the 2012 Sistema Fellows Program. Launched by NEC in 2009, the Sistema Fellows program (previously called Abreu Fellows) extends the work of Dr. José Antonio Abreu ’02 hon. D.M., who developed El Sistema in Venezuela as a national system of orchestral training. Started with 11 youngsters who played music together in a garage in Caracas, El Sistema now serves and transforms the lives of more than 300,000 young people, most of them from the poorest strata of society.

The Fellows Program is an in-depth executive training program designed for outstanding, young postgraduate musicians and music educators, passionate for their art and for social development, who seek to guide the development of El Sistema programs in the U.S and beyond.

Fellows are instructed in leadership, communication, organizational development, and fundraising skills. They will have the opportunity to work with underserved and at-risk youth and communities. Each Fellow is supported with a full scholarship and a monthly stipend for living expenses. The program includes a 4-week self-developed internship plus a 5-week residency in Venezuela.

Upon completion of the Sistema Fellowship, graduates of the program are required to work on behalf of an El Sistema–inspired program in the U.S. for at least one year. Graduates will become members of an ever-expanding network of Sistema Fellows, mentoring other leaders and teachers while developing their own local programs consistent with the original intent of El Sistema.

The application deadline is February 8, 2013. Decisions will be made by the end of March. The program will begin on August 26, 2013 and is limited to 10 Fellows. If you have any questions about the application process please contact Virginia Hecker.
