The NEC Preparatory School offers a rich array of orchestras for students with varying degrees of experience and virtuosity on their instruments. Each spring auditions are held for all of the orchestras, with any remaining openings being filled in September.

The orchestra program include:
- Three full orchestras, with winds, brass, percussion, and string players (Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Youth Symphony, Youth Repertory Orchestra)
- Four large string orchestras (Junior Repertory Orchestra, Preparatory String Orchestra, two String Training Orchestras)
- String Chamber Orchestra
- Baroque orchestras at various levels
All of the orchestras usually perform at least twice each year at NEC. The Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and Youth Symphony are both touring ensembles, with tours scheduled for Summer 2011.
