Small Jazz Ensembles

David Zoffer, Chair

These ensembles are designed for instrumentalists and vocalists desiring a small ensemble experience with emphasis on the exploration of various jazz, Third Stream, popular, and fusion styles. Emphasis will be placed on the application of jazz theory concepts through performance. Larger involvement in the program is a preference consideration for placement in ensembles. Groups will receive 28 60-minute coaching sessions and the opportunity to perform in workshops and recitals throughout the year. Auditions take place in September.

Additional times by arrangement with department chair, David Zoffer.

The Youth Jazz Orchestra is a new ensemble that debuted in September 2008 at the NEC Preparatory School. Since then they have been recognized as one of the Preparatory School's premier large ensembles and were showcased at the 2009 and 2010 Feast of Music. YJO has also been featured as part of Boston's First Night Celebrations for First Night 2010-2012. Having given their Jordan Hall Debut on June 2, 2009, YJO performs in NEC's Jordan Hall on a yearly basis and also gives performances in Brown Hall.

The Orchestra is directed by celebrated jazz artist Ken Schaphorst, who chairs NEC's college jazz studies department and directs the college-level jazz orchestra. The ensemble rehearses on Wednesday evenings, 7 – 9 PM, beginning in September, and is open to pre-college-age trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, and percussion players.
