New Opera Department Music Director

Robert Tweten comes from Santa Fe Opera to NEC as new Opera Department music director.

Conductor Robert Tweten will join the New England Conservatory opera faculty as Music Director in Fall 2017. His duties will include conducting one production each year, individual coaching and masterclasses, and advising repertoire and casting.

Thomas Novak, New England Conservatory’s Interim President, commented on Tweten’s new appointment:

“We are delighted to welcome Bob Tweten to the NEC community as Music Director of the Opera Department. Bob brings a wealth of experience working with young singers, as well as a strong professional profile as a conductor and coach, so the opportunity to study with such an artist will be of great benefit to our students.”

The Conservatory is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2017, and Tweten’s creative impact will undoubtedly be felt as students, faculty, and alums usher in a new era. Esteemed opera stage director and NEC Opera Department Chair Joshua Major talked about what Tweten will bring to the future of the department:

“The addition of Bob to our faculty will raise the level of our instruction and ability to prepare singers to succeed in the field.”

For the Santa Fe Opera, where he serves as Head of Music Staff, Robert Tweten has conducted a number of productions as well as their 50th Anniversary Concert. Now equally at home as a recitalist as a conductor, Robert has performed with many of today’s most prominent singers. More about Robert Tweten
