Massachusetts Cultural Council grants for 2017 were awarded to five NEC-educated composers, including John Mallia of the faculty.

This year all four major grants to composers from the Massachusetts Cultural Council went to composers who studied at New England Conservatory. Artist Fellowship competitive grants in the amount of $12,000 were chosen by an anonymous jury based on blind review of submissions of recent work, and were awarded to David Fiuczynski '89, '08 M.M., John Mallia '92 M.M., Jason Palmer '07, and Scott Wheeler '78 M.M. Mallia is also a member of NEC's composition faculty, and oversees the Electronic Music Studio, as well as co-directing the Electronic Workshop at NEC's Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice. He previously received an MCC Artist Fellowship in 2009. Jason Palmer returned to NEC this year to teaches in the Jazz Lab summer institute.

In addition to these competitive grants, one of four $1,000 finalist grants was awarded to Joel LaRue Smith '01.
