Charles Peltz, Director of Wind Ensemble Activities, and William Drury, Associate Conductor of Wind Ensembles, lead this early evening program of works by Giovanni Gabrieli, Launy Grøndahl, Jan Koetsier, Steven Kukla, Magnus Lindberg, and alumnus Jason Belcher '10, '12 M.M.

This concert is dedicated to the memory of Adolph "Bud" Herseth '54 M.M., '85 hon. D.M. and Patrick Maxfield '79. Conductor Charles Peltz wrote to Wind Ensemble students the following dedication:

We have been saddened in recent days by the passing of some remarkable musicians.

Two of those are brass players who have special NEC connections—one who left here and gained world renown, one who stayed and contributed immeasurably to our life at NEC.

The first was the incomparable Adolph “Bud” Herseth, who passed away Saturday. This extraordinary NEC alum was principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony for—pay close attention—53 years. An incomparable run for anyone, but even more remarkable for someone who defined the sound of the orchestra he played in and defined trumpet playing for a generation. He was an NEC graduate and his work inspires us all still.

The second was tuba player Patrick Maxfield, who, after graduating from NEC, worked in Firestone Library creating the extraordinary recordings collection, listening and cataloging, advising on purchases and for all, serving as a first-rate resource for the deeply serious listener.

We should and will dedicate our concert to these two musicians who impacted our lives so positively—one from afar and one right here.

May we all spend our musical lives in such notable service.

The Gabrieli Project

In anticipation of the 400th anniversary of the death of composer Giovanni Gabrieli (c.1555–1612), members of the New England Conservatory community have joined forces to create and disseminate performing editions for modern instruments of some key Gabrieli early editions. The works performed on this season's NEC Wind Ensemble concerts have been edited by NEC Wind Ensemble director Charles Peltz and composer Kathryn Salfelder '09.
