"Her music soulfully reflects, wistfully regrets, romantically woos, joyfully celebrates."

Named Best Female Vocalist by the Jazz Journalists Association in both 2005 and 2013, Luciana Souza '94 M.M. defies category with her activities as a singer and songwriter.

Souza threw down the gauntlet of eclecticism last year by simultaneously releasing two disparate recording: one of music associated with Chet Baker, and the other marking the completion of her Brazilian Duos project. At the same time, Souza also participated in Derek Bermel's Cancionas Americanas and in an award-winning Gil Evans recording organized by Ryan Truesdell '06 M.M.

Souza's previous recordings have covered everything from the bossa nova of her native Brazil to settings of poems by Pablo Neruda and Elizabeth Bishop. Classical audiences have heard Souza as soloist in major works by Osvaldo Golijov: Oceana and La Pasión segun San Marcos, one of the oratorio commissions that marked the 250th anniversary of Bach's death in 2000.

This week Luciana Souza returns to her alma mater to work with NEC's jazz majors. The residency includes two public masterclasses, and concludes with a concert of Souza's music.
