NEC's Professional String Quartet Training Program offers intensive training and coaching for exceptional groups that show the talent and commitment necessary to pursue a concert career. A single quartet, selected by audition, is chosen for each two-year residency. That ensemble works closely with program director Paul Katz, founding cellist of the Cleveland Quartet, along with other studio teachers and chamber music coaches.
Founded in 2006 by the Sphinx Organization, the Harlem Quartet is composed of Ilmar Gavilán and Melissa White, violin; Juan-Miguel Hernandez, viola; Paul Wiancko, cello. The group has performed at the White House, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress. In 2007, it released its debut CD, Take the "A" Train, on the White Pine label. The Harlem is known for its accessible programs and engaging style. The program:
Mozart: String Quartet No. 15 in D-minor, K. 421
Judith Zaimont: String Quartet "The Figure" (2007)
Schubert: String Quartet No. 14 in D-minor "Death and the Maiden"
