Палехская миниатюра, or Palekh, is a type of Russian lacquer art which features a beautifully-detailed miniature painting on a varnished object. Palekh art on papier-mâché first appeared in 1923 in the village of Palekh, located in the Palekhsky District, and is based on a local history of icon painting. Palekh miniatures usually show characters from real life, literature, fairy tales, bylinas, and songs, and artists use gold and bright paints on an inky black background.
The beautiful box offered in our silent auction was carefully transported from Russia by our Feast of Music committee co-chair Margarita Rudyak.
