Jonathan Richter

Dr. Jonathan Richter is an active conductor, vocalist, and music educator based in the Boston area. He currently serves on the choral faculty of New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. Engaged with all three divisions of the Conservatory, he directs the Concert Choir and teaches graduate-level Choral Literature at the college, conducts three choral ensembles at the Preparatory School, and teaches conducting lessons through the School of Continuing Education. Additionally, Richter is an adjunct professor at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, where he runs the choral program and teaches undergraduate arts classes. He has served as the guest conductor of honor choruses throughout the northeast and is frequently engaged as a clinician and adjudicator at regional choral festivals.

In the past, Richter has held positions as a teacher and choral director at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, MA; Plymouth North and South High Schools in Plymouth, MA; and Suffield High School in Suffield, CT. In January 2017 Richter completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting at Boston University. Additionally, Richter holds degrees from Yale University (MM in choral conducting) and the University of Connecticut (BA in music, BS in education). He has studied conducting with Ann Howard Jones, Scott Allen Jarrett, David Hoose, Marguerite L. Brooks, Simon Carrington and Peter Bagley. He has also participated in masterclasses and private conducting lessons with Helmuth Rilling, Stephen Layton, Nicholas McGegan and Paul Hillier. As someone who constantly searches out new works, Dr. Richter has conducted or prepared choruses for premieres of new works by Silvio Amato, Whitman Brown, and Stephen Feigenbaum, among others. An avid advocate for music education, Richter is active member of both the American Choral Director's Association and the National Association for Music Education. Jonathan and his wife Arielle live in Braintree, MA with their son, Benjamin.
