Tonight's program celebrates life, in both death and birth. Paul Hindemith's Des Todes Tod, or "The Death of Deaths," features NEC Artist Diploma in Opera student Erica Petrocelli, with NEC string faculty, in this unearthly song cycle.

The lives of two jazz greats, Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie, are then celebrated by honoring their 100th birth year, with performances by Ran Blake and NEC students and alumni from the Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation departments.

The evening closes with Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor. In following tonight's theme, the composer titled his work "In Memory of a Great Artist" in dedicating his trio to then recently deceased pianist and friend Nikolai Rubenstein.
