How an NEC Violin Student Used Cutting-Edge Neuroscience to Understand the Unspoken Connection Between Performer and Audience
Through an EM Grant and collaboration with Northeastern’s MIND Lab, Arun Asthagiri ’24 analyzed the brainwaves of 21 participants during live and recorded performances at NEC to understand how live music moves and connects us. He presented his groundbreaking findings in April at the Cognitive Neuroscience Society’s Annual Meeting.

Beauty Intolerable: How an EM Grant Helped An NEC Vocal Performance Student Produce a Concert Celebrating Womanhood
When Vocal Performance major Anna Poltronieri Tang '25 first heard Sheila Silver's Beauty Intolerable songbook set to the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay back in 2021, its messages about womanhood profoundly impacted her. Two years later, with support from NEC's Entrepreneurial Musicianship (EM) office, Anna produced Beauty Intolerable here at NEC with her peers in the voice department, faculty member Tanya Blaich, and guidance from Sheila Silver herself.
