Pianist Jason Moran, a MacArthur Fellow called "the most provocative thinker in current jazz" by Rolling Stone magazine, visits NEC each semester for several teaching residencies during which he works behind-the-scenes in one-on-one studio lessons and in ensemble coachings, as well as participating in a variety of projects that are open to the public. In the past year these ranged from the "Mahler Unleashed" festival to the Boston premiere of his "In My Mind" project devoted to Thelonious Monk.

Bassist Dave Holland visits NEC once a semester for residencies that range from workshops specifically for bassists to explorations of his work as a composer, like tonight's concert with NEC students. These residencies often include other collaborators, and Holland and Moran are taking advantage of an overlap in their teaching residencies at New England Conservatory this month to join forces for this joint masterclass.
