Prep Pianist Daniel Kim wins Second Prize in Seventh New York International Piano Competition

Congratulations to Daniel Kim! The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation has announced the 17-year old pianist as the Second Prize Winner in the Seventh New York International Piano Competition, as well as the Winner of the Best Performance of Required Commissioned Work for his interpretation of Gabriela Lena Frank’s Nocturno Nazqueño. In addition to the monetary prize of  $6,000 for being awarded second place and $1,500 for Best Performance of a Commissioned Work, the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation will also present Daniel in distinguished venues throughout the United States, beginning next season.

Described as a musician with "startling technique" and "a mature sense of interpretation" by The Boston Musical Intelligencer, Daniel studies with Jonathan Bass in the NEC Preparatory School where his first teacher was Marilyn Roth. Daniel has won numerous competitions, including First Prize at the 2013 Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, with which he performed the Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 on March 1, 2014 in Symphony Hall, and First Prize at the 2012 Hartford International Chopin Competition. He also won 1st place at the 2012 NEC Concerto Competition Division C and performed the Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 2 with the NEC Youth Symphony.  In 2011, Daniel received Second Prize at the Steinway Competition of Boston in his division. He also advanced to the finals of the 2011 1st Bang & Olufsen International Piano RAMA Competition in Aarhus, Denmark. As First Prize Winner of the 2010 Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition, he performed the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 with the orchestra at Sanders Theatre, under the baton of maestro Gunther Schuller. Daniel has participated in two NEC Prep Piano Tours, performing solo repertoire in Weimar, at the Schumann House in Leipzig, in Paris, and in the Chopin Hall on the grounds of France's Nohant Festival.
