NEC Summer Session 2010

9th Annual New England Conservatory
Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra

Thursday, July 22 - Sunday, July 25
Paige Dashner Long, Director

Metropolitan Flute Festival OrchestraThe Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra is a unique ensemble opportunity for students and teachers at the intermediate and advanced levels. This intensive weekend combines large ensemble and smaller select advanced ensemble rehearsals, concluding with a final concert at New England Conservatory's historic Jordan Hall. Teachers are invited to participate with students in the large flute ensemble and they will be featured in the advanced select ensemble. We welcome their studio participation. In addition, university and conservatory music majors will be featured during one selection. Director Paige Long will bring her unique flute collection, including her Kotato double contrabass flute and will select flutists to use them during the weekend. Music will be mailed to participants to the first rehearsal.

The advanced select ensemble will be chosen and part assignments will be based on consideration of the following:

  • Students may submit either an audition tape to the address below with two short pieces in contrasting styles or a teacher letter of recommendation commenting on the flutist's accuracy of pitch, rhythm, tone quality, level of playing, and a short list of two or three pieces of flute literature that the student can comfortably play.
  • Adult amateurs may send in an audition tape or write a brief information letter describing their performance and ensemble experience, with a repertoire list of pieces most recently studied or performed.
  • Teachers are requested to provide a short bio.
