"Chip" Grant IV '96 M.M., Founder, Conductor, and Artistic Director of Urban Opera will make his European directorial debut with the production of the little match girl passion; contemporary composer David Lang's Pulitzer-Prize winning composition.  The production opened to critical acclaim last year gaining praise from the San Francisco Chronicle and A Beast in the Jungle, both of whom independently listed the San Francisco production in their Best Classical Event of 2012 roster.  The opera takes the Hans Christian Andersen story and layers it over the palindrome storytelling structure employed by J.S. Bach in his St. Matthew Passion.  Grant asked butoh style dancer, Anastazia Louise (pictured), to interpret the role of "the little match girl" and brought in award-winning lighting designer Matthew Antaky to help realize the specialized lighting and projections used in the production.  The cast of singers who also accompany themselves on a variety of percussion instruments is comprised of soprano, Jennifer Paulino; mezzo-soprano, Celeste Winant; tenor Eric Maggay Tuan; and bass Sidney Chen, a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Meredith Monk Ensemble, M6.  The production, conducted by San Francisco Lyric Opera's Barnaby Palmer will be presented in April of 2013 at Den Fynske Opera in Odense, Denmark; the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. 2013-03-28
