NEC Summer Session 2010
Vocal Vacation Urban Choral Arts Festival July 6-9; July 12-17
Welcome to Vocal Vacation, a choir, singing, arts immersion festival for urban and suburban children and teens ages 7-18. For more information contact Joanne Crowell: joanne.crowell@necmusic.edu. All students sing in the Gala Concert in Jordan Hall on July 17, 2010.
Vocal Vacation is a cross-cultural summer music choral festival where urban and suburban children and teens gather together for friendship and song. An innovative component of the Kodály Music Institute, this two-week program for Grades 2-12 provides in-depth artistic experiences. Each student has a daily group music class taught via the Kodály approach, daily chorus practice, and other arts-related activities such as folk dancing, recorder, and visual arts "treks" to local museums. Music classes and chorus are taught by master Kodály educators and are observed by teacher participants attending the Kodály Music Institute as part of their training.
This exciting choral program is for children and teen participants who have strong interest and a solid proficiency in singing skills. The goal is complete immersion in the joy of music making. Our enrollment aim is a balance of children and teens from inner city and suburban communities.
The philosophical basis of the Kodály concept is the belief that music is the birthright of every child, and that all children are able to learn to sing in tune through the use of high-quality folk, jazz, and classical music. Training leads to life-long music enjoyment as it develops musicians who sight-sing music and are musical participants throughout their lives.
