Dedication:
When John Swallow passed away on October 20th, 2012, the music world and the trombone world lost a great artist and teacher. Swallow was a pioneer of new music and brought to life the trombone not only as an orchestral instrument, but also as an important voice in chamber music and as a soloist. The scope of his musical engagements over his career include being a member of high ranking ensembles such as the United States Army Band, Utah Symphony, Chicago Symphony, New York Ballet Orchestra, New York Brass Quintet, Gunther Schuller's Twentieth Century Innovations, and Arthur Weisberg's Contemporary Chamber Music Ensemble.
Swallow was associated with New England Conservatory for over 20 years. During some of this time he had as many as 20 students weekly at NEC, not including his other students at Yale School of Music, Hartt School of Music, and Manhattan School of Music.
Swallow had many new solo works written for him by such notable composers as Gunther Schuller, Joan Tower, and Alec Wilder.
We dedicate this year's Brass Bash to John Swallow for his great contributions to NEC, not only as an outstanding devoted teacher and great performing artist but also for his generosity and warmth as a person.
