Beyer 3rd in Dublin

Pianist takes third prize in Irish competition.

New England Conservatory congratulates Alexander Beyer  ’17 A.B.  ’18 M.M., a second year student in the joint Harvard/NEC program, who received Third Prize in the 10th Dublin International Piano Competition on May 26. One of four prize winners selected from a field of 63, Beyer took home €7000. He also won the Ita Stephens prize for the best performance of a piece by Beethoven and the Special Prize for the best concerto performance by a finalist, other than the first prize winner .

A resident of Fairfield, Connecticut, Alex studies with Wha-Kyung Byun and Russell Sherman.  He was previously a prize winner in the 2010 Piano Arts Competition and a Finalist in the 2012 Gina Bachauer International Competition. As a winner of the NEC Piano Honors Competition he made his Jordan Hall debut in 2014. He was a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and received Sixth Prize in the 2015 National Chopin Competition. At Harvard, he is majoring in applied mathematics and statistics.

One of the most important piano competitions, the triennial Dublin event is under the artistic direction of the distinguished Irish pianist John O’Conor and administrative direction of Ann Fuller. Among this year’s judges was NEC alumnus and faculty member Max Levinson ’95 A.D., who won the competition in 1997.
