What do you like about studying at NEC?
“I love how excited everyone is about classical music. It's one thing to personally treasure the art but to be surrounded by so many tremendous musicians that share your joy is like coming home. Even with so many talented students, the atmosphere is more about community than competition. With all the hardships that face classical musicians already, this is something that we treasure and build year after year. NEC has also made me realize how many amazing young musicians are out there right now. I cannot say enough about the caliber of students and the dedication of the faculty."
What do you like about Boston?
“I was surprised at how many terrific orchestras are in the area. Also, the museums and general culture are abounding. Most people visit Boston for the history but it would be a tragedy if they missed all the art that the city offers up daily. As the Graduate Assistant for Student Activities, it is my immense pleasure to create programs for the students at NEC. I firmly believe that branching out and experiencing everything that Boston has to offer will in turn enrich each student's life and art.”
Can you think of a particular moment or experience at NEC that was memorable?
“My favorite playing opportunity was in the orchestra pit for the spring semester Bernstein opera. The small chamber orchestra that assembled really bonded and let loose so the music was fantastic. I think because we were not the main attraction, we were able to take ourselves less seriously and really put some spirit into the program, which is what Bernstein truly requires.”
What are your plans/goals after NEC?
“After my recital this fall, I'll be auditioning for jobs the whole year. As far as a life goal, I want someone to pay me to play my instrument. I'm not even that particular about the gig. Anytime you can make a living ‘playing’ and pursuing something that makes you this happy, you should hold on to it for as long as you can.”
