Applications to the Music Theory major are accepted at the graduate level only. The only exception made is for current NEC undergraduate performance or composition majors, who may apply during their second year to transfer into the Music Theory major for their third and fourth years. We do not accept undergraduate transfer students from outside institutions into the Music Theory major.
Music Theory applicants must submit materials that demonstrate background in theory (e.g., analytical papers, compositions). There is no performance audition as part of the Music Theory admission process, but applicants may be asked to interview with faculty.
Listed below are the required supplemental application materials;
- One of the following:
a.) An extensive analytical paper
b.) Two to three shorter analytical papers
c.) A composition and related paper
- An essay on personal interests in music, performance or composition experience, or expectations and professional goals.
