Yoonshin Song ’06 M.M. ’08 G.D., who studied with Don Weilerstein for four years, has been chosen the new concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony. She has been a member of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra since 2010 and is also the grand prize winner of the 2007 Stradivarius International Violin Competition. The DSO has undergone much turmoil in the last year, what with a damaging contract dispute, strike and curtailed season. Their previous Concertmaster left in the wake of the troubles, Yoonshin is seen as a critical part of the orchestra’s recovery.  2012-05-24

 

Nathan Shields '06 is a composer based in New York. The recipient of the 2012 Morton Gould Young Composer AWard by the ASCAP Foundation, 2011 Presser Music Award, he has also received two BMI Young Composer Awards, the Toru Takemitsu Prize from the Japan Society of Boston, and fellowships from the Ucross Foundation, the Wellesley Composers’ Conference, the Banff Centre, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild. He was recently awarded the Carlos Surinach Commission from BMI and Concert Artists’ Guild for Tenebrae, written for Bridget Kibbey, which was premiered by Ms. Kibbey and the Jupiter String Quartet at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. 2012-04-09

Julia Van Doren '06Yulia Van Doren ’06 is currently based in Paris, France as a recipient of the Frank Huntington Beebe grant.  She has been a very active performer including performances  at The Lincoln Center, The Astral Artist Concert Series, The Opera Royal de Versailles, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Opera De Nice, and Music of the Baroque.  She also made her Far East Debut in the Macau International Music Festival, sang Belinda to Stephanie Blythe’s first Dido, and debuted with the LA Phil in a new Shostakovich opera fragment.  2012-01-26

 


Blanka Bednarz '97 M.M. '07 D.M.A., and Cheung Chau '06 D.M.A.Cheung Chau '06 D.M.A. is Director of Orchestra at University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. He is also director of Sinfonietta Polonia which he and Blanka Bednarz '97 M.M. '07 D.M.A. established in 2004. SP and Atma Trio presented a Szymanowski Festival in Beijing in August 2011 as a result of a very significant and competitively awarded grant by the Polish Ministry of Culture. The festival is an Event of the International Cultural Programme of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council. Performances took place in the Beijing Concert Hall, the Forbidden City Hall and the National Centre for the Performing Arts. In addition, SP also performed in Tianjin, Hunan, and Huhhot, with Chau as director and conductor and Bednarz as soloist and concertmaster. Chau has recently conducted Tianjin Philharmonic and Filharmonica Parmigiana. He has also conducted philharmonic orchestras in Lublin, Olsztyn, Walbrzych, Kielce, Nordhausen, Xiamen and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, where he was a fellow under Edo de Waart. His upcoming conducting engagements include Bloomington, MN and Bangkok China. 2011-11-09

The Noah Kaplan Quartet's lastest album, "Descendants."Composer and saxophonist Noah Kaplan ’06 (Jazz Performance) and his quartet released their latest album this month on HatHut Records entitled Descendants. It features fellow NEC alumni Giacomo Merega ’07 M.M. (electric bass) and Jason Nazary ’04 (drums) as well as current NEC faculty member Joe Morris (guitar). The album is dedicated “To the Hallowed Memory of Joe Maneri.” Noah currently lives in Brooklyn, NY 2011-10-07

 

 

Ryan Truesdell '06 MM, Jazz CompositionRyan Truesdell ’06 M.M. is producing and recording the music of the great composer/arranger Gil Evans for a special project celebrating the centennial of his birth. Ryan has discovered, through his research, that there are nearly 50 works of Gil’s that have never been recorded (or in some cases, heard), spanning almost his entire career, from the 1940s through the 1980s. Ryan says, “It’s incredible music that has to be shared, and what better time to bring this music to life than in celebration of the centennial of Gil’s birth.” As a part of the project, a record will be released on Gil’s 100th birthday (May 13, 2012), through the company ArtistShare. Jeremy Cohen '06 M.M., Jazz CompositionAfter studying traditional drumming in Ghana, West Africa, composer and percussionist Jeremy Cohen ’06 M.M. became Music Director at the Umana Middle School in East Boston where he created an innovative new music curriculum. He went on to found ThisWorldMusic, an educational consulting firm through which he leads professional development workshops for arts organizations and school districts nationwide. Jeremy also teaches drumming to incarcerated youth through the non-profit Unlocking the Light and at UMass Amherst, where he leads field study courses in Ghana. He sits on the Young Audiences of Massachusetts Board of Directors and is a consultant for the Music National Service initiative. Jeremy lives in Cambridge, MA. 2010-08-20
