Joe Sullivan, '87 M.M. Joe has lived in Montreal and has been active as a performer, composer, arranger and bandleader. A prolific composer, Sullivan directs a jazz sextet and a jazz Big Band. He has six compact discs to his name, the most recent being “Voices” (Effendi 2010) for sextet and “Northern Ontario Suite” for the Big Band. He currently directs the McGill Chamber Jazz Ensemble and teaches jazz composition, arranging and trumpet at McGill University, where he is an associate professor. 2012-02-15
Garree Stephan ’86, ’87 MM and Karen (Rafferty) Stephan ’87 have joined the legendary Conn-Selmer corporation (a subsidiary of Steinway Musical Instruments) in manufacturing professional world-class musical instruments. Previously mentioned in the NEC class notes for their front cover feature and masterclass performance and article in Jazz Player Magazine, Garree now works for the historic Vincent Bach plant while Karen works for the Center for Woodwind Excellence plant. Laurie Rogers '87 M.M., Vocal Accompaniment, was recently named Director of Young Artists for Opera Saratoga (formerly known as Lake George Opera). She is currently on the music staff of the Dallas Opera and prepared the world premiere of Jake Heggie's opera Moby-Dick, which opened in April 2010. Laurie has been a member of the music staff at the Green Mountain Opera Festival in Waitsfield, VT; on the coaching staff of Opera New Jersey; and on the faculty of the Professional Advantage training program in Mercatello sul Metauro, Italy. Laurie currently makes her home in Philadelphia, PA and coaches and accompanies recitals regularly. 2011-05-20
Dr. John Graulty ’87 M.M. has been appointed Dean of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Fine Arts at Merced College in Merced, Calif. He was previously Chair of the Music Department at Delaware State University in Dover. He has also held faculty positions at the University of Indianapolis, Butler University, and Goshen College, where he served as chair of the music department. In addition, John served as a clarinetist in the West Point Band and conductor in the U.S. Air Force Band Program following the completion of his doctoral studies at Teachers College at Columbia University. John and his wife Susan have four daughters – Valerie, 21; Stephanie, 19; Natalie, 16; and Michelle, 13. 2009-10-02
