Language Exam for Vocalists, Conductors and Collaborative Pianists in the Master of Music Program

(Also required for any other graduate students interested in enrolling in a foreign language course during their first year.)

Wednesday, August 27 - 5:30-7:30 - SB 313, 314 and 315

These three tests are designed to evaluate your Italian, German and/or French language abilities. You should only be taking this test if you have prior experience with these languages. You will be tested on Grammar, Reading Comprehension, and Writing. Answer as many questions as you can. The idea of this test is not to get a high score, but rather to place you in the correct course for your level of Italian, German and/or French. If you do not know the answer to a question it is better to leave it blank than to guess. There will not be a spoken portion of this exam.

Diction Exam for Vocalists in the Master of Music Program

Monday, August 25 - 7:00-9:00 - SB G01, G13, G14

The placement exam in diction will be in two parts: spoken and written. Two poetry texts in each language taken from the standard vocal repertoire (German Lied, French mélodie and Italian song) will first be read aloud by each individual student privately. The student will then take the sheet containing the texts and write the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) above the text. The sheet will then be handed to the proctor. The scoring of the exam will determine whether or not a student will need to take a certain class in diction, and/or into which section the student will be placed.
