Chorus is something we recommend for all musicians, regardless of instrument! Singing enhances instrumental playing, and it's a great human experience.

There are three choruses offered in this integrated program, which is designed to supplement the early instrumental studies and the theory program, as well as teach early to advances choral technique. The ages listed are guidelines. Each child will have an individual meeting with the director for appropriate placement in the program. Click here to sign-up for an audition.
Open to singers, ages 6-9, with little or no former experience. Students build a foundation of healthy vocal production and aural skills through developmentally-appropriate vocal activities and repertoire. Students perform in two concerts yearly with at least one performance in Jordan hall. Students must have text-reading ability.
Rehearsal: Saturday, 8-8:45 AM
Open to singers, ages 8-12, by placement audition. Instruction in CC emphasizes healthy vocal quality, musicianship, and notation- and score-reading skills. Students sing unison and 2-part repertoire in a variety of styles and languages, and perform two concerts yearly in Jordan Hall.
Rehearsal: Saturday, 9-10 AM
Open to singers, ages 10-14, with unchanged treble voices by audition. This group is an advanced ensemble, which collaborates with musical ensembles throughout the Boston area. Students should have notation and score-reading ability. Students perform 2-, 3-, and 4-part traditional and contemporary choral literature in many styles and languages. They perform a minimum of two yearly concerts with at least one performance in Jordan Hall.

Young Women’s Chorale (YWC)
Open by audition to intermediate treble voices, the Young Women’s Chorale is a select intermediate ensemble comprised of sopranos and altos in grades 7-10. This ensemble performs a wide variety of challenging choral repertoire for women’s voice in up to 4 parts. Additionally, the instruction in YWC focuses on health vocal production and the improvement of essential musicianship skills. Entrance to the Young Women’s Chorale is by audition, and students have the option to dual-enroll in either Children’s Chorus or Youth Chorale (entrance also by audition).

Youth Chorale and Youth Camerata (YC/YCC)
The NEC Youth Chorale is a highly celebrated mixed chorus for advanced singers in grades 9-12. The ensemble performs frequently in NEC's Jordan Hall and other regional venues. The Youth Chorale often has the opportunity to perform with instrumental ensembles of various sizes, and in recent years it has shared the stage with the NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and Youth Symphony, as well as the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra. Comprised of students from the greater Boston area and beyond, the Youth Chorale offers young singers the opportunity to experience and perform the masterworks of the choral repertoire at an exceptionally high level. Recent concert programs have featured works such as the Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes, Mahler's Symphony No. 2 ("Ressurrection"), the Mozart Missa Brevis in F, K.192, and the Bernstein Chichester Psalms.
Entrance into the Youth Chorale is by audition only. Once students have been accepted in to the Youth Chorale, they can audition in the fall for placement in Youth Camerata, a highly advanced ensemble comprised of SATB singers who are members of the Youth Chorale.

Singers will work together to craft their own special sound and develop skills in harmonization, improvisation, and arranging to create their own repertoire of songs drawing from popular, world, early, and classical music. The group will perform in Jordan Hall, Open Mic Nights presented by the CI Department and in the community. Beatboxers are welcome.
2 Levels available for singers:
13+ for CI A Cappella intermediate – meets Saturdays 11 AM-12 PM
15+ for CI A Cappella advanced – meets Saturdays 1-2 PM
For all Choruses: Each May, NEC Prep holds auditions for Chorus acceptance/advancement for the following school year.
