Application Process

Please read about the application and audition process for full instructions on applying to the NEC/Harvard dual degree program.

Costs

The cost of the program consists of four years of Harvard tuition and one year of NEC tuition. In addition, NEC/Harvard program students are billed for the cost of studio instruction at NEC for the first four years; currently, this charge is $8500. Students should apply for financial aid at both institutions as part of the admissions process.

Housing

Dual degree students live on Harvard's campus during their undergraduate study. All first-year students at Harvard are required to live on campus, and while students have the option to move off-campus after the first year, most undergraduates choose to live in college housing for all four years. In the fifth year when students are studying full-time at NEC, they may either request graduate housing in NEC's residence hall or choose to live off-campus.

Academic Advising

Harvard undergraduates receive academic advising first through the Freshman Dean's Office, then through the department of their chosen concentration. In addition, all students in the joint program will be advised by the Head Tutor of the Harvard Music Department as they progress through their undergraduate studies, particularly with regard to ensemble participation and studies in music theory and history. NEC's Academic Advisors meet with dual-degree students each semester to track their progress, and serve as advisors for the MM degree. Studio teachers and NEC department chairs may also serve as informal advisors.

Transportation

Harvard is located in Cambridge, about three miles from NEC's campus. Transportation is not provided between Harvard and NEC. However, public transportation between the schools is easy to navigate. It takes about 20-30 minutes to travel between the schools on the bus or subway, or 30-40 minutes to walk.

By bus: Take the #1 bus from Harvard Square to the intersection of Massachusetts Ave. and Huntington Ave.

By subway: Take the MBTA Red Line (inbound) from Harvard Square to Park Street, then the eastbound E branch of the Green Line to Symphony. When returning, take the Green Line toward Lechmere to Park Street, then the Red Line outbound to Harvard.

Or: Take the Red Line from Harvard Square to Downtown Crossing, then take the Orange Line toward Forest Hills to Mass Ave. To return, take the Orange Line toward Oak Grove from Mass Ave, then the Red Line outbound to Harvard.
